Sarah's Story

A photo of Sarah Wood, dressed as a witch in a purple costume, surrounded by an ornate gold frame.

At 17, Sarah Wood was a junior in high school and having a great time in her life. She was in the school play, looking into art schools in Portland, and singing anywhere and everywhere she could. She had an amazing voice. She loved spending time with her family, especially her sisters Erica and Stephanie; she also loved spending time with her friends, trying new things, and meeting new people. She often spent time on the weekends doing photography, taking senior portraits and couples photos of her friends. In February of 2015 she was diagnosed with brain cancer, a glioblastoma multiforme DIPG. She was given 12-15 months to live. After her brain surgery and her first round of radiation and chemotherapy there was no trace of her tumor. She was labeled an outlier. And we had great hope that she had beaten this cancer. During this time and in the following years she spoke at a fundraiser for The Rood Family Pavilion which houses the Ronald McDonald house in Portland. She spoke at Sparrow Club events and reached out to others who suffered from brain tumors or other ailments. She reached many people while sharing her story on her Team Sarah page and personal social media. During her journey she was supported by so many people and organizations, including but not limited to the Ethan Jostad Foundation, Tumor Hater, Sparrow Club, and Southern Oregon Candlelighters. Unfortunately Sarah’s tumor came back and after going through another surgery and round of chemo and radiation, facial reconstruction surgery, and surgery for a stint and port, Sarah's health declined. She passed November 1st of 2020. Her spirit lives on in all the things she loved, including Halloween. Halloween was her favorite holiday. She would begin planning Halloween parties and costumes for family and friends in June. Sarah would be so happy to know that her Halloween spirit has lived on and that families will be celebrating in her honor.
