Film Festival - Marvelous Movies from Down Under
Mondays, 4/4/16 - 5/23/16
1:30 - 4:30 pm
This is a previously taught course with new content. The Australian film industry dates back to 1906 but many Americans are unaware of some wonderful films that were “imported” from Down Under. Indeed, unless you were lucky enough to have an art film theater in your neighborhood, you likely have missed some cinema masterpieces. This course will include nine films that were made in Australia and were very successful in the U. S. The films we will watch date from the 1970s to 2002. Some are light and others are anything but light. Each session will include presentation of the film and an instructor-facilitated wide-ranging discussion. Past discussions have been fascinating because everyone sees things somewhat
differently. CLASS SIZE 60
INSTRUCTOR: Before retiring, Jerry Sonnenschein was a pension actuary. More to the point, he has been an avid reader and a fan of films most of his life. Before moving to Oregon, he attended and led courses at an OLLI-type group in Michigan and belonged to a Great Books group and an independent book club. Since coming to Oregon in 2008, he has led a discussion group at OLLI on a favorite novel, established the OLLI More Great Reads course, and led 12 courses on films.
Both ScienceWorks and OLLI exert a vital influence on the quality of life in the Rogue Valley through their support of lifelong learning. ScienceWorks is comprised of 1,800 members and serves adults as well as children via interactive exhibits, live science shows and dynamic programs. OLLI focuses on continuing education for adults, and offers its almost 1,200 members a wide-ranging assortment of courses for the low annual fee of $100. For new members, OLLI currently offers classes in the Spring 2013 Quarter plus the Fall 2013 through Spring 2014 Quarters (a total of 4 quarters) for only $150.
