Fire & Ice Weekend
Join us January 11 & 12 for a weekend that's so hot, it's cool!
Explore what's hot and what's not with special hands-on activities and demonstrations.
Hands-on activities 11:00-12:30 and 2:30-4:00 each day!
11am - Cutting the Ice Let’s cut the ice by increasing the pressure! Changing pressure can change the melting point of ice. We’ll use this to cut ice cubes in half without dangerous knives! (Suggested Ages: 5 and up)
2:30pm - Flame Testing Did you know different metals create different colors of fire? Test out our metal salts over our Bunsen burner and see what colors you can find. (Suggested Ages: 8 & up)
11am - Fire Extinguisher One of the main ingredients in combustion, or fire, is oxygen. A great way to put out a fire is removing the oxygen, which we will do with our lab-made chemistry fire extinguishers! (Suggested Ages: 5 and up)
2:30pm - Ice Carving What will you create out of a small block of ice? Come create your own ice carving at the museum! (Suggested Ages: 8 and up)
Science Demos 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00 each day!
12:00 Demo: Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream Watch as we make ice cream in seconds right in front of you! We will make delicious frozen treats by freezing the liquid solutions with Liquid Nitrogen! In the SciTheater. (Suggested Ages: All Ages)
2:00 Demo: Genie in a Bottle Need a few wishes? Watch as we release a genie from a bottle right in front of you! Learn the trick to have cloud of steam released from a bottle. May not contain real genie or grant wishes. In the SciTheater. (Suggested Ages: 8 and up)
4:00 Demo: Liquid Nitrogen Eruption Liquid nitrogen boils when outside of its tank and will expand to nearly 700 times its size! When you seal it in a bottle, something explosive can happen! Watch as we place a sealed bottle of nitrogen in a tank of water, from a safe distance of course. Outside on the lawn. (Suggested Ages: 5 and up)
