Ashland Fiber Network Telescope Lending Program

The Ashland Fiber Network Telescope Lending program at ScienceWorks is a cooperative effort between ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum, Ashland Fiber Network, and Southern Oregon Skywatchers.  With a generous grant from Ashland Fiber Network, six youths were able to build a set of eight inch Dobsonian telescopes through our Summer Science Camp program in 2007, with the help of members from the Southern Oregon Skywatchers.  These six telescopes are now available for loan to ScienceWorks’ members.  The objective of this program is to not only educate families in how to use a telescope, but to increase understanding and appreciation of the study of astronomy and the night sky.

In order to check out a telescope you must:
1) Be a member of ScienceWorks
2) Go through a training session (a basic training session can be done at ScienceWorks, but people are encouraged to go to an evening training session held during Star Parties put on by Southern Oregon Skywatchers on the Saturday closest to the new moon, weather permitting)
3) Have a safe way to transport the telescope (the telescope has the following rough dimensions:  tube = 51 ˝” long x 14” wide, base = 26” tall x 24” wide)
4) Sign a contract

During the lunar month the telescope is loaned to your family, the moon will go through all of its phases and several planets can be observed. Also observable with these telescopes are double stars, globular clusters, nebula and galaxies. Consult the binder that accompanies the telescope for observing tips and more information. Clear skies!
