The El Niņo Cycle and the Pacific Northwest

The ongoing 2015-16 El Niņo is projected to be one of the 3 strongest El Niņo events on record since at least 1950. Join Brett Lutz, local Meteorologist, to learn more about the El Niņo Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Cycle and how much of a dent it is expected to make in the ongoing drought across the region. He will explore how ENSO typically affects weather patterns in the Pacific Northwest, including snow pack, and what is expected to come next in the typical 3-5 year ENSO cycle. Brett will focus on what the cycle means for precipitation, especially rain and snow, as well as temperatures in our region and other climate factors of significance.

Brett Lutz is currently a Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Medford specializing in weather forecasting, fire weather, mountain weather, and climate. He has lived in Ashland since 2006 and in the Pacific Northwest since 2003. Brett received his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of Utah in 1999 and was employed as a Weather Officer for the United States Air Force from 1999 to 2003 before working for the NWS in Eureka, California. Through his many outdoor interests revolving around snow and water, Brett has become very knowledgeable about climate indices, particularly the El Niņo Southern Oscillation.
