Exploring Inquiry & Engineering Design

This program is designed to give your students hands-on experience with science content in their own classroom. We offer labs geared to grades K - 8, and incorporate Scientific Inquiry and Engineering Design standards from the newly adopted ODE Science Content Standards when possible.

Details:

  • Provides hands-on experience in grade-level appropriate science content
  • Labs address grade-level specific ODE Science Content Standards
  • 3 hours of instruction in each classroom; an hour and a half each day for two consecutive days
  • Pre- and Post-Program materials available for each participating teacher that offer background information and extension ideas

Cost: $200 for the first class + mileage, $100 per additional class

Lab Options

Flight School
Students conduct hands-on experiments which test the forces acting on paper airplanes in flight. They will build several types of planes and analyze their observations using knowledge of the forces involved.

  • Targeted grades: K-8th
  • Also available as a 4-day Illuminating Science Inquiry program for 3rd-8th

Hot Stuff
Students will explore the concepts of heat transfer and matter phase changes through melting ice. Inquiries will involve friction, conduction, convection and radiation and their effects on ice in film canisters.

  • Targeted grades: 3rd-6th
  • Also available as a 4-day Illuminating Science Inquiry program

Happening Habitats
Students will explore the habitat preferences of a common small invertebrate. They will observe isopods (aka pill bugs or rolly-pollies), and test predictions regarding their habitat preferences.

  • Targeted grades: 2nd-5th
  • Also available as a 4-day Illuminating Science Inquiry program

Magnetic Personalities
Students will explore the properties of magnets and learn to differentiate between magnets, magnetic materials and non-magnetic materials. Students will test predictions about the size of magnetic fields and strength of various magnets.

  • Targeted grades: K-6th
  • Also available as a 4-day Illuminating Science Inquiry program
Slow it Down!

In this engineering challenge, students will redesign a steep road so that cars can travel safely from the top of the mountain to the bottom.

  • Targeted grades: K-8th
  • Also available as a 4-day Engineering Design program for 3rd-8th
